The Story
The scale of the community
Texas is home to more Black Americans than any other state. The Texas Tribune spoke with Black Texans about life and political power in the state two years after George Floyd’s murder.
Why some residents considered leaving
People interviewed described the combined effects of the pandemic, economic insecurity, limits on how racism is taught in schools, voting restrictions, and state political maps. Their views varied; some were weighing a move, while others remained committed to organizing where they live.
Representation and the future
The report considers whether the size of Texas’s Black population translates into influence at the Capitol and in local decisions. It follows community members who want more equitable policy and a future in Texas that makes staying possible.
